As the ‘Funeral Bride,’ Alexandra of Hesse-Darmstadt marries Tsar Nicholas II only a week after the premature death of his father, Tsar Alexander III.

Already dismissed out of hand by the court, Alexandra has to further contend with the continuing ambition of her mother-in-law, the Dowager-Empress Minnie, who has no intention of ceding imperial precedence to the new Empress or of giving up one inch of her power and influence over her emotionally-dependent son, the new Tsar.

Nevertheless, Empress Alexandra is determined to stamp her authority on Russia as a whole and on Nicholas in particular, but to do so she must produce an heir. Having given birth to daughter after daughter after daughter, she becomes desperate and turns to the first of her mystical advisors, Msgr. Philippe, who persuades her, among other things, that she is invisible.

And then comes the moment of her greatest triumph with the birth of her son and the heir to the throne of all the Russias, the Tsarevich Alexei.

All six volumes are (planned) as follows

1. 'The Funeral Bride' 1884-1894 - published November 2015

2. 'The Empress of Tears' 1895-1904 - published March 2016

3. 'The Shaken Throne' 1904-1907 - published July 2016

4. 'The Pride of Eagles' 1907-1913 - published May 2017

5. 'No Greater Crown' 1914-1917 - published September 2018

6. ' The Far Kingdom' 1917 - 1918 - to be published by July 2019

Like others who have reviewed this book, I was engrossed by the story, but frustrated by the self-indulgent idiocy of the real Alexandra and her weak husband Nicholas. There were never two people more unfit for their roles than these two. Alexandra started off on the wrong foot by marrying Nicholas only weeks after the death of Alexander III (against all advice to wait) and it went downhill from there.

I will probably read the next book, but not the last one. The tragedy at Ekaterinberg is still so terrible, even after nearly a century. The foolishness of Nicholas and Alexandra condemned to death their children and faithful servants. It is hard not to dislike that selfish stupid woman.

I think this book is probably an accurate portrayal of the real Alexandra. People tried to advise her, but she just would not listen. She was a tragically flawed fool.

This book manages to strip away all the nuance away from the Romanovs leaving them unsympathetic and frankly, unlikable. The first person narration is awkward and underlines that the author may not really understand the historical people and circumstances well. Finally, it's full of errors and typos. I'm not a quitter, so I finished it, but wondering why I wasted the time.
This is the 3rd book by this author, and the 2nd in this series that i've read, and i simply do not how she accomplishes her incredible creations called books. I'd love to have the ability to hang out in her brain just to absorb an iota of what she has stored in there....
It's as if she has the ability to shed her own skin and envelop that of her subject. Thoroughly.

Book 2 picks up where Alexandra has married her beloved Tsar 'Nicki' and takes us through the emotional roller coaster years right up till she has finally delivered the long desired heir. Four daughters were more of a nuisance, beautiful reflections of herself but not what she was looking for.... Is it possible to be narcissistic and incredibly insecure at the same time? I looked it up in the dictionary and alas, her picture was not there.. In a way i sympathize, I sure wouldn't want to be empress of anywhere. The constant fake smiles and chitchat, the critiques of what i said, wore and ate, the lack of privacy and those neck-breaking crowns would be a deal-breaker. HOWEVER...because she was not considered to be the blessed holy mother of Russia and did not have mere mortals swoon in her presence, she was miserable. There was protocol to be followed but she wanted the glory without the work.
Both she and her husband were ill-prepared to run a damn thing except perhaps a family farm? A farm of course that had a palace with a swimming pool on each floor please. He walked around looking to God and mama for guidance because he was chosen of course. SHE walks around with the feelings that she is with him and Russia because God wants her to guide her husband. I honestly do not think Nicholas was a nincompoop....i do think he was intellectually obtuse. And i think she had some serious psychological problems. Together they made beautiful doomed children and ended a dynasty.
Interesting.
Nice read, historically accurate facts, however some of the dialogue is too corny, cheesy.
Although the conversations are speculative, the author has really done her homework. I have enjoyed reading about the empress and her life. Waiting for the next installment.
I have read histories of Alexandra and her times. This is historical fiction but very well done. It is "told" by Alexandra. If ever Russia needed a strong czar this was the time. Nicholas and Alexandra were both weak and she was particularly not knowledgeable about the people of Russia.
I have read both of the published volumes of Hewston's novels which are presented as the autobiography of the last Tsaritsa of Russia. I am something of a Romanov junky and have read a good bit of the history of the period, and I must say that Hewston's portrayal of Alexandra is much as history depicts her - tragic, exasperating, well-meaning, but also a very difficult person to live with, and as I read both of the first two novels in two days, I found myself feeling somewhat claustrophobic and sympathizing a great deal with the Tsar, her mother-in-law, her sister the saint-to-be Ella, etc. whom at one time or another Alix considers to be her antagonists. There were a couple of minor errors in the first book - for instance the Edinburgh princess (Missie, Ducky, etc) did have a brother. I did enjoy these books, but I am rather thankful there is a hiatus between this and the next in the series. Too much time with Alix is wearing on the nerves! And I must confess I would have liked to have seen a bit more of Alix's eldest sister Victoria, who married Louis of Battenburg and eventually became the grandmother of Elizabeth II's husband. She was the hard-headed, practical member of that family.
