An amazing writer that has been through a lot in his life and put his heart and soul into his craft. Rich devoted his life to passion and enjoyment and I'm proud to have known him during the days we struggled as artists early on in our lives. His unfortunate recent passing and battle with cancer has him leaving us too soon, but this novel will continue on with his memory.Product details

Waiting For The Bomb Richard Livsey 9781492167457 Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this book! It's a fast read and I finished it one Sunday afternoon. "Waiting for the Bomb" is about the travails of adulthood but it maintains a positive outlook. It's about pursuing dreams despite all odds. It's especially inspirational for writers since this novel deals with a writer.
This would make a great present for an aspiring writer or artist!
I have read Livsey's novel twice now and must say I really enjoyed it. His writing makes it very easy to connect with and relate to the characters and their daily lives. As someone who was not living in the NYC area until after 9/11, this novel really conveyed to me the personal impact that the events of that day had beyond the news and media coverage. I would definitely recommend Waiting for the Bomb to others.
I got a copy at a local signing from the author. I read it quickly in about three days and it is highly readable. The story is about a aspiring novelist, his obsession with terrorist attacks, and his relationship trials. I've read several other stories about aspiring writers that have a tendency to name drop literary classics, and come off as pretentious. This book does not do that and the character's trials come off as realistic. And there is some comic relief with the character details of the roommate, and throughout the entire novel.
I recommend this to anyone interested in writing issues from the male perspective, maybe even reluctant adult male readers, and people interested in how NYC was like shortly after September 11th.
"Waiting For the Bomb" was an enjoyable read, from start to finish. The book revolves around an aspiring writer named Trent and his struggles to achieve his dream of becoming a published novelist. With his mind set on a book regarding September 11, 2001, Trent faces all kind of obstacles. So what's the big deal, right?
"Waiting For the Bomb" creates a connection! "May your words enlighten the minds of readers everywhere," a character in the book toasts to Trent; and Livsey does just that. I had the pleasure of purchasing my copy direct from the author, and during our conversation he explained that he geared this book toward all writers on their journey, however rough and rugged it may be, toward accomplishing their literary goals--it says so in the Dedication, by the way. Well, it worked. I feel connected to Trent and his journey. I can relate on many levels, I recognize from a new angle that I'm not an isolated case study, and I come away further inspired.
I would compare Livsey's writing style as similar to Hemingway's for it is direct, straight-forward, measured, and steady prose. The many chapters are all concise, and there is an aggressive pace that sets the tone for the reader to follow. Because of these aspects, the book is enjoyably easy to read and readily digestible, while leaving room for rumination…and I didn't want to put it down. If one were to criticize Livsey for a lack of descriptive depth toward his characters and settings, I would say look at Hemingway and see how well he fared.
The narrative follows several threads based upon relationships Trent holds with various characters, some closely and others more indirectly; in the end, they all get brought together in a karmic way. Perhaps one of the messages Livsey wishes to convey considers how all things come together/work out/make life better in the end. After all, this is a reality-based novel. I particularly enjoyed the outcome for Dennis--I want to visit that bookstore now (probably already have, as I too have scouted the many bookstores in NYC)! Appropriately, his ex-girlfriend's fate is left unmentioned, and rightly so, I should say. Carl's story is incredible and touching. And I also thoroughly enjoy how Trent repeatedly makes mental notes of writhing about this person or that incident, and then actually putting it in this book--great literary device!
I could relate to Trent in so many ways it was rather stunning. I have been confronted by family and friends that the notion of a "struggling writer" is romantic and touching, but not pragmatic or practical, and even had the lawyer thing dangled before me. I have had the writer's blocks where I just stare at the blinking cursor and don't know what to say. I have felt the low's and high's of relationships and how they've affected my writing output. I have loathed technology and…abused my computer, lol. I have dealt with the significant others/good friends/family members who constantly suggest "do it, or else…" And, of course, the same dialogue always ensues and carries out nearly verbatim when I mention I'm a writer, as happens in this book constantly. There are other connection points (though not ALL, I should stress--such as the substance and booze) for me that I believe would have most writers (and others, such as artists) also saying, "Hey, yeah, me too!"
Great debut novel, Richard Livsey! I find it heartening, dramatic, and inspiring. Thank you for letting me know that my own struggles are not unique (as history is wont to prove repeatedly, right?), and with determination and effort I too shall persevere! I am very happy this book came into my life, and I leave it in a prominent spot on my writing desk when the need may arise for me to find some reassurance from a fellow author...
Im not much of a reader, but upon reading "Waiting for the bomb" by Richard Livsey, I have become one. Its a great novel. The descriptions of the characters,Their lifestyles, their views on life after 911, we can all relate to. I thoroughly enjoyed every page-putting this book down after reading the evenings chapters was a challenge, I wanted to keep reading. I look forward to this Authors next book. His writing is exciting and has me wanting to see more of his work. My opinion.. Buy it! You'll enjoy it .
9/11 is a subject that is difficult to approach, especially for those of us caught in the immediate vicinity. The horror of that day was unanticipated and unmistakably traumatizing.
When I purchased this book, considering its potentially controversial title, "Waiting for the Bomb", I must admit I had my doubts. My expectations swirled around a much more direct adaptation of the horrendous attacks and its aftermath...I was gladly mistaken.
Richard Livsey's novel is so much more than 9/11. It is a great many things in life the longing for acceptance and companionship; overcoming of paralyzingly irrational fear; finding resilience through adversity; and the pursuit of success and love. It is a highly readable novel which touches on the basic human condition while using 9/11 as a sobering backdrop.
"Waiting for the Bomb" had me laughing, crying, and even seething with anger. Its characters are memorable and relatable. Each time I opened the book, it was like meeting an old friend for a cup of coffee.
A highly recommended book! Enjoy your own journey with Trent, Dennis, and Tracy.
